Amendment I: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
The 2016 Presidential election of the United States was one of the most controversial in history and the result of the election was no different. Many concerns were raised after the election about policy changes that may take place. The concerns motivated hundreds of thousands to take the streets to exercise their first amendment rights to free speech and peaceful assembly; although all did not remain peaceful.
Distressed America is a portrait of division in the United States. The photographs in the series were captured in Washington D.C. on the dates of January 20th, January 21st, and April 22nd; the 2017 Presidential Inauguration, Women’s March, and March for Science.
